Cash App taxes: what freelancers need to know
Money clients send you on Cash App for work is business income, whether or not Cash App sends you a tax form. Here's how to keep it straight.
Will I get a 1099-K from Cash App?
Payment apps send a Form 1099-K when your business payments cross the federal reporting threshold. Under current federal law that threshold is over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year, though some states use lower limits. Check the IRS 1099-K page for the latest rules.
Either way, all business income is taxable, even if you never receive a form.
Separate business from personal payments
Splitting dinner with a friend isn't income. A client paying an invoice is. If both run through the same Cash App, you need a record of which is which. Quarterbird's swipe review makes that a few seconds per payment, and remembers each sender so it only asks once.
How to export your Cash App history
- Sign in at cash.app on a computer
- Go to Activity → Statements
- Choose Export CSV
- Import the file into Quarterbird. Cash App fees are split out automatically as a write-off.
Know your number for every payment.
Import from Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, Stripe, Square or your bank. No bank login required. Reminder before your trial ends.
