Taxes for content creators
Ad revenue, brand deals, memberships, fan tips and affiliate commissions all count as income. Once you're creating to earn money, you're running a business: you owe self-employment tax on the profit and can deduct what it costs to make your content.
Which forms you'll get
Platforms report creator payouts on Form 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or 1099-K depending on how they pay you, and brands that pay you directly send a 1099-NEC. Starting with payments made in 2026, a client or platform only has to send you a Form 1099-NEC once it pays you $2,000 or more in a year (it was $600), under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The threshold is set to adjust for inflation after 2026.
Either way, every dollar is taxable whether or not you get a form. Your own records are what count.
Gifted products and fan tips
Products a brand sends you in exchange for content are generally income at their fair market value, even if no money changes hands. Unsolicited PR packages with no strings attached are a grey area; keep a list either way.
Fan tips and donations are income too. Treasury's list of occupations for the new "no tax on tips" deduction (2025 through 2028, up to $25,000) includes digital content creators, so some voluntary tips may qualify. It lowers income tax, not self-employment tax, and has income limits.
Common write-offs
- Cameras, microphones, lighting and computers used for your content.
- Editing software, music licenses, stock footage and thumbnail tools.
- Props, sets and products you buy specifically for content.
- Managers', agents' and editors' fees.
- The business share of your phone and internet.
- Home office, if you have a space used regularly and only for work. The IRS simplified method is $5 per square foot, up to 300 square feet.
- Health insurance premiums you pay yourself (self-employed health insurance deduction), if you aren't eligible for an employer plan.
- Retirement contributions to a SEP IRA or solo 401(k), which lower income tax (not self-employment tax).
How much to set aside
Creator income swings from month to month, so save a percentage of every payout as it lands. A common starting point is 25–30% of profit, adjusted for your state; a month heavy with brand deals can push you into a higher bracket.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay taxes on free products from brands?
If you received them in exchange for posting about them, they're generally taxable income at fair market value. Keep a record of what you got and what it's worth.
Do YouTubers pay self-employment tax?
Yes, if your channel is a business and your net earnings are $400 or more for the year. Ad revenue, memberships and sponsorships all count.
Can I deduct clothes I wear in videos?
Only if they're not suitable for everyday wear, like costumes. Normal clothing generally isn't deductible even if you bought it for a video.
